The Killer Asteroid Project is a not for profit research program geared toward student education in the field of near earth objects, near earth asteroids and near earth object observations. Operating under NASA's Near Earth Object Observation Program, The Killer Asteroid Project provides opportunities for students to engage in observing NEOs or near earth objects every clear night and those near earth object observations include observations of killer comets. The Killer Asteroid Project reports all observations of near earth objects to the Minor Planet Center in association with the Astronomical Research Institute a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization and the Astronomical Research Observatory using data acquired with a 0.81m telescope ( 32 inch telescope ) and 0.61m telescope ( 24 inch telescope ). Reports to the Minor Planet Center are published in the Minor Planet Electronic Circulars ( MPECs ) and at the NEODyS or NEO Dynamics site at the University of Pisa in Italy. All observations are in association with Astronomical Research Observatory Code H55.
Observations of NEAs ( near earth asteroids ) are important to the astronomical community to determine the potential earth impact hazard these potentially hazardous asteroids impose. Our goal is to make as many observations of NEOs and comets every clear night to help determine future close approaches of NEAs ( near earth asteroids ) to realistically understand the virtual impactor status of these near earth objects.
Near Earth Asteroids, near earth objects and NEOs are our primary area focus of research.
